News roundup – 11.12.07

Here’s the lowdown on what the big three networks thought was news today …

CBS Nightly News: San Francisco oil spill, Report on ‘open’ adoptions, Bhutto under house arrest again, the secret tunnels of Gaza, governmental corruption on tape, crime crackdown by curfew and one family’s sacrifice for the military.

NBC Nightly News: Airlines brace for Thanksgiving travel, America’s mortgage crisis, crack cocaine conviction reviews, possible criminal charges after Bay Area oil spill, Pakistan power struggle, Cleveland clinic employees get healthy too, Obama-Clinton race heats up, profile of an Iraq War veteran/hero

ABC World News Tonight: the War in Pakistan, Pakistan opposition leader under house arrest again, Hamas violence, Iraqi rocket attacks decreasing, Bay Area oil spill, Iraq War vet’s move from the battlefield to the Dartmouth campus.

 - A moderately slow news day reveals a lot about the news judgment of an organization – because each newsroom is forced to pick a line-up … and you’ll notice there is very little overlap in the way of top news stories.  The obvious similarities include Vet’s Day features, the Pakistan-Bhutto situation and some mention of the Bay Area oil spill.

The goal of the ‘news roundup’ is just to compare and contrast news judgments by looking at what the networks decided was good enough to fill a 22-min newscast with. Analysis will be provided when time permits (watching all THREE newscasts back-to-back-to-back is a little time consuming).
